Mr Z and I love castles. European ones, Asian ones, you name it. And Japan is one of the few Asian countries that are full of medieval castles like Europe. They’re not all originals (most were destroyed during World War II and Meiji era where the Emperor’s supporters tore them down as they were a sign of the Shogun era) but still, they’re gorgeous.
Mr Z and I made it our mission to visit most of Japan’s original 12 castles. We’ve already been to Himeji castle (the most beautiful out of the 12) so 11 more to go.
This time we wanted to see Hikone castle which was a day trip from Osaka.
We went there when there was a threat of a typhoon. But luckily we were not caught during a storm. It poured at first then stopped then poured again. Then it didn’t rain for the entire afternoon.
We were lucky.
Because of the weather, there weren’t that many people in the castle. Except for some Japanese students.
