We went to Kyoto to see a replica of one of Japan’s oldest castles- Heian castle in Japan. It was the imperial castle from 794-1227 (that’s old!). In 1227 the power of the palace dwindled until it got burned to the ground and was never rebuilt again. A replica was built during the 1970s.
The Heian period was famous because this was the period Japan emulated China a lot. This was the only era I saw where Japan looked like a cross between China and Korea — before they started distinguishing themselves from China and becoming the cultural Japan we know.
