St John Basilica and Fort near Ephesus

We left Ephesus to go on another journey to Saint John Basilica and the new fort in the Ephesus area. Our hotel shuttle drove us back and we began a leisurely stroll around the premises.

Saint John Basilica was built by the great (and my favorite Byzantine emperor), Justinian in the 6th century AD. It was built over the remains of Saint John the disciple (the one who wrote the Revelations in the Bible). The church was said to be very large and grand.

How large and grand it would have looked!

You can enter this beautiful Byzantine fortress now.

There’s nothing much inside except cisterns. Still it’s worth taking a look for the grand view here
